Siding is the “skin” that protects your home from the environment and gives it a finished look. Homeowners today have a wide range of siding choices, but two of the most popular are vinyl and fiber cement. Both have their advantages, and either can provide a beautiful look. Which you choose depends on a number of factors, but here are some things you can keep in mind when comparing the two.
Upkeep: Vinyl siding comes pre-finished, so that means no future repainting or staining. Maintenance for the most part consists of an occasional hose-off to remove dirt and insects. Fiber cement siding comes either primed or pre-finished, but does require periodic repainting.
Appearance: Both siding materials are very versatile. Fiber cement siding comes in a number of design profiles, some replicating the look of wood boards and shakes as well vertical designs and smooth options mimicking the texture of stucco. Depending on which manufacturer you choose, vinyl siding is available in over 300 standard and custom colors, so you can most likely find just the right color for your home.
Durability: Either material is extremely durable and resistant to hail, rain, and wind, although fiber cement siding does have a bit of an edge, and when it comes to combustibility, nothing except metal siding can match it.
Cost: Both materials can be very economical, although vinyl siding is less costly and easier to install. Fiber cement requires special tools, and only a professional siding contractor should install it. However, because of its fire resistance, some homeowners’ insurance companies offer discounts for fiber cement siding.
