Renovations: Kitchen Remodeling
A faulty dishwasher landed a Minneapolis couple in hot water when they returned home from an out-of-town trip to find major water damage to their kitchen floor and cabinets, and laundry room, which was located right below it. With a huge mess on their hands, they decided it was finally time to remodel their 1951 kitchen, including adding modern fixtures and finishes.
The couple chose to work with Iron River Construction because they had already worked with us in the past, as had their parents and the wife’s sister, for a total of eight projects. The entire family was thrilled with all of our previous projects, so the couple knew working with our team meant they would get the results they desired. We already had an excellent rapport with them from our previous work and a remarkable depth of understanding of the challenges we could face in remodeling their kitchen due to the age of the home.
A Renovation Brings New Life to an Old Kitchen
To begin the process, the couple met with two of our designers, one who helped with the final plan and redesign and the other who assisted with final product selections. The extensive remodel included removing the old countertops and damaged wood floors and cabinets. To create a more functional space, we also eliminated the peninsula, filled in an open stairwell, and created more storage by expanding the cabinets on both sides of the space. For a sleeker, more up-to-date look, we installed painted cabinets with flat panel shaker style doors and a versatile rolling center island cart, both built by Schonhardt Custom Cabinets.
For the countertops, the couple chose a gorgeous Carrara Milan quartz material, and a farm sink with Moen fixtures rounded out the space. For the finishing touch and a definite “wow” factor, we installed beautiful, cracked gloss winter coal tile for the floor and backsplash. Other details included all new painted millwork, an enlarged pass-through opening between the kitchen and the front family room, and an updated laundry room with new vinyl flooring.
