Location: Shorewood, MN
Renovations: Basement Renovation; Kitchen Renovation; Bathroom Renovation
When this couple bought their first home in Shorewood, they knew from the start that a major renovation was in their future. The layout was outdated, the stairwell to the finished basement was awkward and inconvenient, and the overall flow of the home just didn’t work for their lifestyle.
They had a clear vision—but also a firm budget—and needed a contractor who could guide them through the process without surprises.
That’s when they found Iron River Construction.

Solving Structural and Spatial Challenges
The biggest challenge was the basement access. The existing stairwell required walking through an unfinished laundry area. Working alongside a structural engineer, our project manager and lead carpenter reimagined the stair layout to create a more natural, integrated transition between floors.
This required some reconfiguration of the primary bedroom above, but ultimately allowed for a much larger closet—a welcome bonus.
The second major hurdle was eliminating a main-level bearing wall. Our team coordinated closely to safely remove the wall and install a beautiful cedar-wrapped beam, opening up the entire main level while maintaining structural integrity.
Final Touches: A Space That Feels Like Home
With custom cabinetry, sleek new countertops, and an open, airy main living space, the home now matches the lifestyle the couple envisioned. The new stair design not only improved function—it connected the home in a way that finally felt right.
The renovation was completed on schedule and within budget. Because the work involved nearly every room, the homeowners stayed with friends for the duration of the three-month project, which made the process smoother for everyone.
