When was the last time you walked around your exterior just to inspect the condition of your siding? Worn-out siding compromises your home’s protective layer and makes it more vulnerable to costly damage like moisture intrusion.
Siding has the tough job of protecting your home from the elements 24/7, so eventually it will show signs of wear and tear. Assess your home siding’s condition for signs it’s time for a replacement. Here’s how:
What You’ll Spot When Siding Wears Out
1. Evidence of Water Intrusion
Don’t risk damage from water penetration that could wreak havoc on your house. When homeowners let things go rather than dealing with the need for small repairs, water can seep in and cause extensive damage. When moisture gets trapped under your existing siding, it may produce bubbles in your current siding. Trapped water is a sign your siding is not properly sealed and its underlayer is vulnerable to rotting. If you have moisture damage, it’s likely time for siding replacement.
2. Skyrocketing Energy Bills
While high energy bills could be caused by old windows, inadequate insulation, or a faulty roof, your siding may be the culprit. Have your energy bills been going up for no apparent reason? It may be that your siding is worn out and needs to be replaced.
3. Rotting Siding
You may have dry rot and not even know it. Grab a screwdriver and tap its handle on various areas of your home siding. If you find a weak area, it may be due to dry rot, which eats away at the under layer of your siding (while the top layer of siding remains looking good!). If you find dry rot, at least that part of your siding should be replaced promptly. If you have lots of dry rot or other siding issues, you may need to completely re-side your house.
4. Old Siding
As a homeowner, it’s important to know when your current siding was installed to help you gauge when it will need to be replaced. The type of siding material on your home will also come into play. Fiber cement siding can last up to 50 years when installed properly and maintained over the years. Vinyl siding may last up to 20 or 25 years, but can start to show signs of aging at 10 years. Wood siding varies in its lifespan based on how well it was maintained. Although siding can last for decades, if it’s near the end of its life, it should be replaced.
5. Unsightly Peeling Paint or Wallpaper
If your existing siding shows signs of wear and tear, water and heat can permeate through your walls and insulation until they reach the interior of your home. The result? Your paint and wallpaper may start peeling off your interior walls. It may look like this is happening for no reason, but problems with your current siding left unnoticed or unaddressed can wreak havoc on your home—including your interior!
6. Cracked or Loose Siding
If some of your siding panels are cracked or loose, it’s important to replace them right away to avoid moisture intrusion. Check the underlayers for damage when siding is replaced. If there are large areas of cracked, loose, or missing siding, contact a reputable siding contractor to have your exterior inspected because it’s likely time for new siding.
7. Frequent Exterior Paint Jobs
Most siding needs to be repainted approximately every 6-8 years. (However, Hardie siding and trim won’t need to be painted for 15 years!) If your siding needs to be painted more frequently than that due to peeling, chipping, or cracking paint, that’s a sign there may be a problem going on under the paint with your siding itself.
8. Unattractive or Damaged Siding
If your current siding is old, worn, or damaged, those are clear signs that it’s time for new siding. Perhaps debris was blown against your exterior during a storm, or maybe your siding is simply out of style and no longer attractive. Your home’s appearance should represent your taste and style, so if it doesn’t look up to par, it’s likely time for replacement siding.
9. Faded Siding
Over time, your current siding may start to fade due to sunlight exposure. If your exterior is severely faded, it’s an indication that your siding is old and most likely approaching the end of its life. Faded siding isn’t safeguarding your house like it did in the past. Don’t wait for additional problems to arise. If your siding is severely faded, contact a reputable siding contractor and have your exterior inspected.
10. Holes in Your Siding
Did something hard hit your siding and puncture it during a recent storm? If there are holes in your existing siding, maybe a woodpecker drilled in it to hide his food there for later use, or to create a nest. Or, you may have insect infestation in your house. Don’t risk the possibility of structural issues due to insect infestation, storm damage, woodpecker damage, or moisture problems left unaddressed. Contact a siding contractor for an inspection.
