While stainless steel has been the overall choice in top-quality appliances for at least the past decade, indicators are that the trend might be changing. Last summer Whirlpool introduced its “Mirror White” finish for its top-line appliances, and some European manufacturers are displaying colorful ranges, including red. So does that mean that stainless is doomed as a kitchen appliance exterior choice. According to some reviews, it isn’t going anywhere soon, despite the growing popularity of white and colors.
What makes stainless so attractive as an appliance finish? For one thing, its much easier to keep clean than a colored finish, especially white. And it it doesn’t chip and is more scratch-resistant. It doesn’t show fingerprints and smudges like black glass. It’s also less expensive to manufacture, and hopefully the makers will pass the price savings along. Plus it goes with just about anything. If your color tastes change, stainless appliances will still fit in. But are you going to still love that red range five years from now when pastels are all the rage?
If that’s the case, you might ask, why all the appliance industry fuss about white and colored appliances? Basically, they are appealing to one segment of homeowners. Many of today’s home buyers – particularly younger ones – are interested in homes which reflect their tastes and style. Long-range planning isn’t a concern; current enjoyment and comfort in a home is. But there are just as many (or more) homeowners who are interested in maintaining and improving the value of their homes and who also think in terms of re-sale. They are the ones who recognize that while they may adore that canary-yellow fridge and range, a prospective buyer might cringe. So appliance manufacturers need to – and probably will – provide for the needs and tastes of both groups.
So if you’ve got your heart on stainless steel appliances, go ahead – odds are they are going to remain popular for a long time. But if what you really want is some color and you’re willing to take into account replacing them when you re-sell or get tired of the color, then putting something you love in a room you spend so much time in is probably the right choice for you.
