When you are driving and you come to a red light, you know that you need to stop. This is the same thing that needs to happen when you come to a red flag in the home remodeling process. We are going to give you eight contractor red flags that you need to be looking for while you are remodeling your home.
Red Flag #1: If the remodeler cannot show that they have a currently registered business and are currently licensed as a contactor to do the kind of work you are looking for, you need to look into a different remodeler.
Red Flag #2: If your remodeler is unwilling to provide you the street address of their business, big red flag. It is okay if they use a PO Box for mail and it is okay for them to work from their home, but you want to know they are more than a mailbox if there came a time where you needed to contact them.
Red Flag #3: When your remodeler is unable to show you proof of current insurance coverage for general business liability, you need to get out of the relationship with that contractor.
Red Flag #4: If the remodeler does no agree to provide you with lien waivers from the remodeler and subcontractors, materials and product supplies, this is a major red flag that could cause you a lot of damage if you do not catch this early.
Red Flag #5: When your remodeler will not give you a reasonable number of client references for you to talk with, or the people they give you are difficult to contact or be found you need to start looking into a different remodeler.
Red Flag #6: The remodeler wants the full payment up front. This is a simple and tricky red flag. Do not give into pure pressure, and call a professional to try and sort the situation out.
Red Flag #7: If the remodeler wants the payment made in cash, a check made out to cash, or to someone or a company other than the remodeling company you are hiring it is usually a sign that they are not licensed properly.
Red Flag #8: If the remodeler appears to be on a shaky financial footing, this could mean they may not be in business long enough to complete your project, pay their supplies or stand behind their work.
